Tarkovsky and Sylvian

Can someone enlighten me about what direct relation the filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky and David Sylvian have? I heard David talking about him in an interview: "Like Andrei Tarkovsky once said, you must look to the shadow aspects of life to focus on the light", or something similar.

I found another similarity in this 3 pictures, the first from Tarkovsky's "Nostalghia"

I don't think there was a direct relation as such. David just often praised the director's work and cited him as an influence on his own work.

I've always loved that photo of Sylvian by the way.

I've never seen Andrei Tarkovsky's works.
David said he watched all of Tarkovsky's works, and the first work he saw was "Nostalgia", after he saw "Nostalgia", he wrote "Nostalgia". David said he likes "Mirror" the most.
in interview with Toru Takemitsu (November steps) around 1992, (after rain tree crow, before concert with Ryuichi Sakamoto, and David says next plan is joint concert with Robert Fripp, in March Japan.

Thank you very much for the information, seems like I am going to have another Tarkovsky cinema night again "The Mirror", and "Nostalghia" are also my favorites... and David's song "Nostalgia" fits the mood of the movie perfectly.

From a radio interview in Germany (Sept. or Oct. 1987 - Nightflight with Alan Bangs):

"I'm a great admirer of Tarkowsky's work. There was a track on the album (SOTB) which related to one of his films, the last film he made, "The Sacrifice." ("Maria") related to that film in some way. It's kind of a personal tribute to Tarkowsky." On the laughter on the record: "It came from a recording I made from the radio. It was one of some strange man that had been living with some Indian Shamans and he was just telling strange stories and I just thought that laugh was wonderful. So, I thought I would use that some day."
