Getting crafty

Postby lastgoldstar on Thu Aug 24, 2006 11:37 pm

Some time last summer, I decided that I wanted to make a few t-shirts- concert-style. Since Japan shirts are practically impossible to find, I made my own.

For my first effort, I used this photo from the Art of Parties tour.

I stocked up on Tulip Velveteen brushable paint (for the life of me, I can find this only at Hobby Lobby and even then, they're constantly out of stock) and bought a few stencil brushes. This velveteen pain is unique in the fact that once it dries, you steam it with an iron and it becomes elevated and puffy to the touch. I opened the picture in Photoshop and used the "stamp" filter on it, giving it a stencil-like appearance. After printing it, I glued it to thick paper (cardstock makes it difficult to cut out) and cut out the right parts with an X-Acto knife. It was a right pain in the arse and took a good two hours (and blurred my vision), but it was very much worth the effort. And I also bought the shirts I used at Hobby Lobby for a measley $3 a piece (adult sizes are $4 but I can fit into a children's XL  )

The front of the shirt:

Bottom left side detail:

Back:

I got LOADS of compliments on it. A lot of people didn't believe me when I told them that I actually made it. So naturally, I didn't stop there.

Shirt #2:

Shirt #3:
Didn't come out as well as the others (I had to mix colours to get that shade of red, perhaps that's why), but it's still my second favourite regardless (TAOP shirt is my favourite).

And on the back, I used a fabric pen and wrote out the lyrics to Ghosts. I also did the puffy side-detailing... the 't' looks more like an 'f', whoops.

And randomly, I did a Duran Duran one, too:

Thought maybe you all would enjoy. :)

Those T-shirts are freaking great!! I especially love the red one... Those are excellent and I can tell you really put a lot of time into them... I have been threatening to make a T-shirt too, but the lazy way- With an iron-on image!! ;-)

Speaking of getting crafty- I am also currently making a 32 in. X 42 in. poster of David Sylvian using charcoal. I'm making it out of this picture...

Keep up the good work on the T-shirts... They look professionally done!!

I made a tshirt quite a few months back. I copy a picture on my computer printer with iron-on transfer paper and then iron it to the shirt.
