First off, I have to say that every song off of Tin Drum is special on its own, but to break it down a little...
Ghosts was the second song I heard from Japan and it really spoke to me. I love how at first, Ghosts seems like a song with no musical structure at all-but after repeated listenings-you can pick it up.
Overall, I would have to say Visions of China is my favorite. The bass line makes me melt as does the video-the use of synth is genius-and Visions of China remains the best car driving song-because you can hit whatever you have dangling from the rearview mirror when Steve CRASHES those symbols.
Life Without Buildings should have definitely been on the final cut-I love David's "Whoa-woah-woah-oh-wo-oh-wo-woah-woah-wo-oh-wo-wo" and the big symbol CRASH after that. Mmmm... Only those brothers can pull it off.
Also-what do you guys think David's talking drum said to him?
I went for the art of parties - damn that was the song that I heard that really made me decide to devote myseslf to the Japan cause....I muchly like Visions of China though - the video and the song just magnifique - these questions are all quite hard but then they would be...
"This island of blue
Where life clings to your hands
Like water and sand
Will loose it's way when you're gone"
I choose Visions of China but it was another hard choice for me...
I've been hit from the sound of this song... in the beginning it sounded strange to me, can't say in what way but then... i kept singing the intro...
(that means in my case that the song entered in my mind!)
But I LOVE Ghosts because... I can feel deeply this song... I lived and live so often what David sings in this song... and obviously love the music too... ^^
I had to choose Ghosts - I've loved it since I was 12, and it has never left my list of top 5 favourite songs ever since.
But Still Life..., Visions of China and Cantonese Boy were all fighting it out for 2nd place, and there's not a single track I don't like. It's an amazing, phenomenal album.
I went for Son's Of Pioneers. I love Steve's drums, but mostly it is Mick's bass playing, incredible. Also was the opening song to the only Japan concert I went to, which turned out to be their last in Europe!
