yep, I was including the one before that also, Polwechsel 3.

The compatibility between his piano and Butcher's saxophone encouraged me to pick up a copy of AMM's Trinity.

not a fan of that one either. :D I rarely like records with no electronics in this area, although of course there are always exceptions. acoustic combos work much better in the live setting, but they tend not to be as exciting as recordings, IMO obviously.

" 5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Sylvian has painted his masterpiece, 9 Aug 2009

Oh well, I can tell you what will happen when a lot of the reviews will have been published: there will be writers who will miss that "persona" of Sylvian who created albums like BRILLIANT TREES or DEAD BEES ON A CAKE; and there will be some writers (not the majority!) who will love this song cycle (I'm quite sure the great Richard Williams will love this album, the man who is just about to release his book THE BLUE MOMENT about the groundbreaking atmosphere of Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE and its long echoes). The reason for such controversial reactions: the voice is the only instrument that is carryying the melody. There are no grooves, no classic harmonies that supply the perfomance (the flights) of the voice. The music comes from the free improv-scene (Evan Parker, Christian Fennesz a.o.) and creates strangely spidery textures you might never have heared before as a "background" for a singer. The moods are exquisite, the lyrics enigmatic, and the singing has that kind of nakedness where artists risk a lot. This is music that belongs to the same class as the late Talk Talk albums and the late Scott Walker. It is a good thing that there are still some guys on the planet who are looking for new horizons and who are not so much interested in repeating a formula that will constantly please the conservative part of their audience. (When Sylvian recorded BLEMISH, he discovered new areas for his songwriting - MANAFON is the best continuation of that path you can imagine.)

Small Metal Gods is incredibly beautiful...I hope the rest of it is like this....

Even the film is gorgeous looking in black and white...i do hope David appears in it though even if its only for a short few minutes.

Wow! Wasn't expecting to hear this today. Very cool! My initial reaction is that it reminds me of Blemish more than I thought it would and also the exit/delete track a bit...both of which I like a LOT, so I'm very pleased. Lyrics are a bit downcast, but I don't supposse that I expected different. I'm really looking forward to the album now! :D

^^ This. And I think I'm a lot more interested in the documentary than I was before. In fact, I think I'm far more interested in this than the SW Insurgentes documentary.

Nice work coming our way I suspect! :-D

It IS beautiful, but it will take a couple of listening sessions before I really get it :)

But the choir section towards the end....ahhhhhhhhhhh! Wow!

"Small Metal Gods" is absolutely incredible. There is the voice carrying the melody and the music perfectly compliments it. This is wonderful music. Be thankful. Amazing video too.

Damn you Sylvian. I had things to do tonight but I've been unable to do anything else than listen to Small Metal Gods, over and over again. It just keeps getting better and better, which isn't excatly a surprise. I can sense a conversation between my subconscience, conscience and the music and I love the feeling of it.

I don't quite see the point of the background sounds...just guitar and voice would've been sufficient. Still love the melody though

Just listened.

I've been listening to David's vocals right from the beginning with Adolescent Sex, and I honestly feel that with Small Metal Gods, he has turned in his finest vocal to date: beautiful, and utterly human. There is an unpolished approach here which lends a vulnerability to the vocal - entirely in keeping with the subject matter. I fully admit my bias, but this is wonderful material.

David Sylvian has given us a gem here.
