I'm certain that a large portion of Sylvian fans will hate it, but I don't care because I'm not one of them Plus, I don't doubt that this album will bring new listeners into the fold just as the work with Robert Fripp in the 90's did...

I don't quite see the point of the background sounds...just guitar and voice would've been sufficient. Still love the melody though

Simon, I think the point is that these "background sounds" are what inspired the vocal melody - they are the sound bed of the piece, from which everything else grew. They also add texture, depth, and atmosphere... at least they do to me

Glad you like the vocals though Blemish (the album) was for me a peak in David's recorded vocal performances, and I think this album will surpass it.

Small Metal Gods is breathtakingly beautiful. I agree with what Slope says about the vulnerability of the vocal performance. A gem.

I listened to it last night 3 times and hijack the audio to listen without the visual.
I still don't know if I will like the album. The video is quite interesting.
My opinion; the album will not attract new fans and only the hardcore base will like it.

And I wanted to add that based on the Wire interview and the lyrics of 'small metal gods', I believe he is becoming more and more free from the world. And the music has become more of an outlet on which to express his poetry.
I wouldn't be surprised if he retired into a monastery in the next 10 years.
He said in Wire he doesn' want to tour again. Not litteraly but I understood it that way.
He is just like anyone else who has understood that we have nothing to gain frim this realm. Now he has to get rid of David Sylvian small piece of remaining ego.

I couldnt disagree with you more. I think the album will certainly attract new fans particulary those who have been interested in the work of Evan Parker, Keith Rowe et all. As for the hardcore base liking it, just look at how Blemish split the "hardcore" fans.

This track is better than most of "Blemish", but so was "Fire In The Forest".

I listened to the track for about three hours non stop last night and i burnt a copy for the half hour drive into work this morning. Davids voice has never sounded better, its a little strange to hear no melody or chorus. The music is not so experimental for me and is quite low in the mix. It would have been nice to hear it a little more and that's not me being critical just my point of view. For me Blemish was more a shock listening to it for the first time, SMG is just gorgeous.
